The term “American dream” is used in many ways, but it essentially is an idea that suggests that anyone in the US can succeed through hard work and has the potential to lead a happy, successful life. Many people have expanded upon or refined the definition to include things such as freedom, fulfillment and meaningful relationships. Both native-born Americans and American immigrants pursue and can achieve the American dream. Someone who manages to achieve his or her version of the American dream is often said to be “living the dream.” The American Dream has been criticised, because some people believe that the structure of society in the US prevents everyone from achieving it. Critics often point to examples of inequality rooted in class, race, religion and ethnicity that suggest that the American dream is not attainable for everyone.
The American Dream was first publicly defined in 1931 by James Truslow Adams in Epic of America. Adam's often-repeated quote is, "The American Dream is that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement."
Adams went on to say that it is not, "... a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position.”
Attaining the dream was really hard for most men and women. Everyones dream is possible, but it will take a lot of work. Money then and today was short of stock and most people continue to live their life through their paycheck. By this, they are trying to achieve there American Dream. Bt this, acheiving there American Dream wasn't just an easy task... It took time, money, education, and passion.
